Vinyl Tile for your Bathroom

Peel-and-stick vinyl tiles are easy, fast and relatively cheap way to transform your room. They are available in a large collection of textures and quality, colors, and nearly all cost between 89 cents and $3 each. Tiles are usually one square foot each, making calculations easy and you can still select different tiles for borders, designs and checkerboard patterns. You only need a few tools and some patience in installing vinyl tile. Here’s how:

Multiply the length of the room by the width to determine how many tiles you need to purchase. This gives you the square footage, which is the same number of 12-inch square tiles you need.

You have to purchase 20% more than you need so that the extra floors will cover some miscalculations or errors, and it is a good idea to keep extra tile in case you need replacements.

Vinyl tile can be installed in almost any existing floor surface excluding carpet. And if you install the tile in a bathroom, remove first the toilet first and then reinstall it when you are finished.

Things you need:

  • Chalk line
  • Utility knife
  • Measuring tape
  • Self-adhesive tile
  • Coping saw for curves
  • Tin snips for cutting odd shapes
  • Straight edge (yardstick, carpenter’s square, etc.)
  • Tile roller (a rolling pin from the kitchen will be enough)

Procedures:

  1. Get rid of the baseboards.
  2. Place a new tile with the backing paper intact next to the doorjamb. Draw a line at the height of the new flooring and undercut the jamb to allow the new tile to slide underneath, if necessary.
  3. Carefully, sweep the existing floor.
  4. Measure and then snap a chalk line across the length and width of the area at the midpoints of adjoining walls to be able to determine the center point of it.
  5. At intersection of the two lines, line up your first tile.
  6. Peel off the backing and align it exactly where you want it and press firmly.
  7. You may now work in any direction you like, and carefully line up each tile with the chalk line or the previous tiles and press it into place. Give special attention in aligning the edges so the rows are straight.
  8. Use s tile roller or a rolling pin to roll over the floor.
